1. Free Entry — No Purchase Necessary
Any person aged 18 or over may register and participate in WC26 Predict entirely free of charge. Free players use the same prediction form, face the same submission deadline, and are scored on the same basis as all other players. Free players appear on the live leaderboard.
No payment is required at any stage to enter, predict, score points, or appear on the leaderboard. There is no free-to-play disadvantage — the prediction game is identical for all participants.
2. Skill-Based Game — Not a Game of Chance
WC26 Predict is a skill-based prediction competition. The outcome depends entirely on a player's knowledge of football, their analytical ability, and the accuracy of their predictions across 72 individual group stage matches.
Players who predict more exact scores and correct results earn more points. The player with the highest total points wins. There is no random draw, no raffle mechanism, and no element of chance in determining the outcome.
This structure satisfies the "no significant element of chance" definition that distinguishes skill competitions from gambling under the Gambling Act 2005.
3. Optional Supporter Contribution
WC26 Predict offers players the option to make a voluntary supporter contribution of £11.50. This contribution is completely optional and separate from game participation.
Players who make this contribution are recognised as supporters and may be considered for prizes under the published game rules. This arrangement is analogous to a skill competition where an optional entry fee is paid to be considered for prizes — a long-standing and lawful format in the UK.
Players who do not make a contribution are fully able to play the prediction game, appear on the leaderboard, and compete on an equal basis. No aspect of the game is restricted to paying players only.
4. Organised by Thurso and District Pipe Band
This competition is organised and operated by Thurso and District Pipe Band, a community pipe band based in Caithness, Scotland. A portion of any supporter contributions goes directly to the band as a charitable donation.
The platform is provided as a technical service by Clairdoncloudit.com. All financial and competition matters are the responsibility of Thurso and District Pipe Band.
5. No Gambling Commission Licence Required
WC26 Predict does not require a Gambling Commission licence because:
- Entry is free and no purchase is necessary to participate;
- The outcome is determined by skill and knowledge, not by chance;
- The game does not constitute a lottery, betting, or gaming as defined under the Gambling Act 2005;
- The optional supporter contribution follows the established UK skill competition model.
If you have questions about this statement, please contact Thurso and District Pipe Band via the Contact page.
